Help your patients sleep better, and offer a structured, NICE-guided sleep service in your pharmacy or clinic.
Insomnia affects millions of people in the UK, and many turn to their local pharmacy for help. All too often, the answer is an over-the-counter sleep aid that can cause side effects, tolerance and next-day drowsiness, without tackling the underlying problem.
Our Sleep Management package gives you and your team the knowledge, tools and PGDs to do things differently. Developed by experienced clinicians at ECG Healthcare, it equips you to deliver a structured sleep service that helps patients understand their sleep, build lasting habits and, where appropriate, access a short course of licensed medication.
The online course takes you step by step from the science of sleep to delivering the service in practice. You will learn about:
How sleep works: REM and nREM sleep, the circadian rhythm, and the roles of melatonin, adenosine and cortisol
The impact of poor sleep: on physical health, mental health, memory, weight and long-term wellbeing
Causes of insomnia: short-term and chronic insomnia, and when to refer to the GP
Obstructive sleep apnoea: how to recognise it and screen using the STOP-BANG questionnaire
Lifestyle and sleep strategies: routine, environment, exercise, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, light and temperature
CBT-I: the first-line treatment for insomnia, and how the service draws on its principles
Medicines for sleep: melatonin and daridorexant, including how they work and who they are suitable for
Delivering the service: a clear appointment structure, from first consultation to follow-up
Applying your learning: a real-life case study to put your knowledge into practice
The Patient Group Directions (PGD) package includes PGDs to supply:
Daridorexant 50mg tablets, for adults with chronic insomnia
Melatonin 2mg modified release tablets, for adults aged 55 and over
Everything you need to get started:
Pre-assessment patient form
Patient consultation form
Two-week sleep diary
Patient information leaflet: top tips for better sleep
The course is suitable for the whole pharmacy or clinic team. Trained team members can support parts of the service, while consultations involving a PGD supply must be carried out by a registered healthcare professional.
